An incident occurred on Jalan Raya Sultan Agung in Jember, where nine adjacent shop houses (ruko) collapsed at around 04:14 WIB. According to Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana spokesperson Agus Wibowo, the collapse was likely caused by the foundation sinking due to soil erosion from overflowing river water, triggered by heavy rainfall.
Witnesses reported hearing cracking sounds in the road around 03:00 WIB and again shortly before the collapse. Cracks in the ground beneath the buildings had already been detected since February 2019. Fortunately, no casualties were reported as the buildings were no longer in use.
The collapse caused significant damage, including land subsidence stretching approximately 94 meters long and 10 meters wide, as well as road damage extending about 43 meters. Debris from the collapsed buildings also blocked the river flow.
In addition, the incident disrupted public utilities such as water pipelines (PDAM), electricity (PLN), and telecommunications networks, leading to traffic congestion in the surrounding area.
A joint team consisting of local government agencies, emergency services, and community members worked together to clear debris from the river and roads. Authorities also urged residents living near the river to remain cautious and alert, especially during periods of extreme weather and rising water levels.
